IU Health allows up to four visitors—including children ages 2 and up if accompanied by an adult—to visit, together, for most patients.

Visitors must screen negative for COVID-19 and follow all masking and safety guidelines while on site. Find more details below.

Hospital visitor guidelines

  • For most patients with or without COVID-19, up to four people (ages 2 and up) may visit at the same time. Patients in semi-private rooms may have up to two visitors at a time.
  • Visiting hours are 8 am – 9 pm, though this may vary by facility. Visitors must follow all safety and infection prevention measures, including masking and other PPE guidance.
  • Children ages 2 – 16 may visit if accompanied by an adult visitor. Children younger than 2 may visit adult patients for end-of-life situations only; exceptions may be approved by chief medical and nursing officers for children younger than 2 to visit adult or pediatric patients.
  • Adult patients in private rooms or in non-ICU settings may have one overnight visitor; pediatric patients may have two parents or guardians approved by the clinical team. No overnight visitors are permitted in ICU settings (end-of-life exceptions may be made by clinical team).
  • For Emergency Department patients, up to two people may visit at a time. Visitation may be reduced based on patient condition and available space.
  • For patients with COVID-19 who are undergoing aerosol generating procedures (AGPs), the local Infection Prevention team will determine if visits are appropriate and what safety precautions must be followed.
  • Clinical teams may manage open visitation for situations involving end-of-life care.

These guidelines may vary by facility based on the local environment. Some areas, such as NICUs, may have additional restrictions.

Mask Policy

Masks are required in the following locations:

  • Patient rooms
  • Emergency waiting rooms
  • Transplant and oncology units
  • All pediatric units

Masks are required for any patient with respiratory symptoms or when indicated by isolation procedures.

Medical grade masks will be available at no cost to you. Masks are not required in public spaces, such as cafeterias, lobbies, gift shops, restrooms and when walking in hallways.
