Sleep Studies

Most sleep disorders are diagnosed through a sleep study. A sleep study monitors your sleep patterns throughout the night to identify anomalies used to make a diagnosis.

Overnight Sleep Study

During an overnight sleep study, a board certified sleep disorder specialist and registered technologist will monitor your sleep patterns throughout the night. This data will aid in making an accurate diagnosis and providing the best treatment options. The overnight rooms at our sleep centers are comfortable — similar to a hotel room. This type of sleep study is used to diagnose a full range of sleep disorders. Learn more about our comprehensive sleep testing.

Items to bring for your overnight sleep study:

  • Your driver's license or photo ID.
  • Your insurance card.
  • Something to sleep in that is 2-piece and loose fitting (no jeans, gowns or silk/satin pajamas).
  • All medications, personal items, toiletries and a change of clothing for the next day. Shower facilities, soap and towels are available.
  • Completed IU Health sleep forms provided and/or mailed to you.
  • If you bring your cell phone, please put it on silent mode.

At-Home Sleep Study

At-home sleep studies take place in your home. A machine will monitor your sleep and breathing patterns. This type of sleep study can be used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea.

The appointment for an at-home sleep study typically lasts 20-30 minutes. During that time, you will be instructed on how to use the equipment. All equipment must be returned the next business day by 11 am.
