Overview

Whether a high school athlete has a minor injury or sustains a major medical emergency, he or she needs access to the highest level of care as quickly as possible.

Athletic trainers are highly skilled health care professionals that collaborate with physicians in prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of all kinds of medical conditions.

This collaboration between athletic trainers and physicians provides young athletes a full range of services, including:

  • Preventive services
  • Clinical examination and diagnosis
  • Emergency care
  • Therapeutic intervention
  • Rehabilitation of injuries and other medical conditions

On-site athletic trainers work with coaches, along with school administrators and staff to ensure the safety of student athletes. They are trained to treat many emergency illnesses and injuries, such as concussions, heat stroke, asthma attacks, a sickle cell crisis, diabetic emergencies, spine injuries and sudden cardiac arrest.

Athletic trainers perform emergency medical management and initial assessment of injury or medical conditions. They also help establish a plan of care that may include getting the injured athlete to see an appropriate physician, providing treatment plans and guiding the athlete through injury rehabilitation.

Our Services

When a school partners with Indiana University Health, its students gain access to all the resources that the largest healthcare system in Indiana offers. Whether its an orthopedic specialist, neurologist, sports cardiologist or emergency care, a partnership with IU Health connects a school and its athletes to the highest level of care for comprehensive medical needs.

If a student-athlete in the Indianapolis area suffers a medical emergency, they will be transported to a Level I Trauma Center at IU Health Methodist Hospital or Riley Hospital for Children.

The IU Health sports medicine staff features 25 nationally certified and state licensed athletic trainers and 12 sports medicine fellowship-trained physicians.

We provide athletic trainers and team physicians for many area schools, including:

We also provide team physicians for Speedway High School.

Concussion Management

Our team physicians are credentialed ImPACT specialists to provide concussion assessment and treatment. Student athletes suspected of having a concussion can see one of them for evaluation. In most cases, physicians recommend that you rest and give your body a chance to recover by restricting activities.
