Biography

Rachel Handt, PT, DPT, NCS, AIB-VRC, is the IU Health Neurological Physical Therapy Residency Coordinator and a physical therapist with IU Health Neurorehabilitation & Robotics. Rachel also works part-time as an Associate Faculty member at the IU Indianapolis Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She completed her undergraduate studies at Ball State University, then attended IU Indianapolis, where she obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy. She later attended a Neurologic Residency at the University of Southern California and Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center. She went on to obtain her board certification in Neurologic Rehabilitation Clinical Practice. Rachel is currently studying at the University of Evansville to complete her PhD in Health Professions Education.

Rachel has over 9 years of experience in physical therapy, working across multiple settings, including inpatient rehabilitation, acute care, and outpatient rehabilitation. Rachel specializes in the treatment of neurological conditions, including (but not limited to):

Rachel works on a variety of treatments with her patients to facilitate their recovery and maximize their mobility and independence; some of those include:

  • Adaptive equipment training and education
  • Balance retraining
  • Functional mobility/functional transfer training
  • Gait interventions (including the use of robotics therapy)
  • Dual mobility and cognitive interventions
  • Vestibular rehabilitation

Rachel’s favorite thing about working with the neuro population is that it allows her to be creative with her treatments and recommendations.
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family, attending Colts games, hanging out with her pets and traveling.
