Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a research oversight committee charged with the responsibility of ensuring the proper care, use and humane treatment of laboratory animals used in research and education.
According to federal law, institutions that use laboratory animals for research or educational purposes must establish an IACUC to oversee and evaluate all aspects of the institution's animal care and use program. The IACUC is a self-regulating entity with authority that is derived from two sources: (1) the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) plus amendments, which is administered through the USDA Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and (2) the Public Health Service, which is administered through the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW).
The IACUC was established in August 1984, and has played an active role in the regulatory compliance of research animals since that time. Prior to using animals in a research or teaching protocol, the investigator must complete and submit an Animal Research Protocol Information Form. Please submit the completed form to Emma Dossey Curole. If the protocol needs to be changed after it has been approved, please add the amendments to the original form and resubmit. The committee meets the third Tuesday of each month to review/approve proposed animal protocols. The deadline for monthly submission is 11 days prior to each meeting. Investigators proposing to use animals in a project are requested to attend the IACUC meeting to present their protocol to the members.
The IACUC is charged with reviewing all proposed use of animals within the institution, reviewing the research laboratories program and inspecting the animals research facilities at least once every six months. The IACUC has the authority to suspend an activity that involves animal non-compliance and submits reports to the Institutional Official, Dr. Anantha Shekhar.
The law requires that the IACUC must have at least five members, including a veterinarian with program responsibilities, a scientist experienced in animal research, a non-scientist and an individual who has no other affiliation with the Institution besides membership in the IACUC.
