Enteral Nutrition team empowers patients and families through their nutritional journeys
IU Health’s Enteral Nutrition team supports patients and their families by ensuring they receive the best care possible. On-site Registered Dietitian Liaisons, Kelsey Herwick at Riley Hospital for Children and Cassidy Wheeler at University and Methodist hospitals, play a crucial role in connecting patients with the important care they need.
Enteral nutrition delivers a liquid food mixture directly to the stomach or small intestine through a tube—essential for patients who cannot take food by mouth due to illness, surgery or other medical conditions—or through oral supplements for patients who are able to swallow and take nutrition by mouth. It provides the necessary nutrition to keep the body strong and healthy, allowing patients to stay active and recover more effectively.
Herwick and Wheeler are central in the patient’s journey and a key part of their role is supporting a patient’s transition from hospital to home. They provide patients and their parents and caregivers with the education and materials needed for successful home care, addressing potential barriers, ensuring accurate orders are placed and discussing insurance options.
“The most rewarding thing is helping parents who don’t think they can do something day-to-day master the skill necessary to take their kiddo home,” says Herwick. Wheeler reiterates how rewarding it is to help patients be equipped with the knowledge and supplies they need to receive enteral nutrition care at home. “I am honored to help provide the essential supplies patients need to nourish their bodies,” says Wheeler.
Wheeler and Herwick are supported by team members like Jane Nitsch, physician liaison manager. Nitsch emphasizes the importance of both hard and soft skills that make these team members well-rounded educators and advocates for their patients. “Knowledge of all forms of tube feeding, equipment, formulas and insurance is crucial, but communication, compassion and understanding are equally important,” she says.
This National Nutrition Month, IU Health celebrates the dedication and expertise of the Enteral Nutrition team in making a positive impact on the lives of those we serve.
