Expanding expert heart care in south-central Indiana

Heart health takes a team approach, and Cardiovascular Surgery – Bloomington has seen a lot of growth dedicated to improving local access to timely, expert care.

In fact, the group has its largest team to date with three surgeons and eight advanced practice providers.

Led by Medical Director Daniel Beckman, MD, this highly-skilled team includes three additional cardiovascular surgeons: Sanjay Tripathi, MD, Bryan McDonnell, MD, and Andrew Wisneski, MD.

“It's great to have expert cardiovascular care close to home, and I think patients really appreciate when they can get the care they need and they don't have to travel far,” says Dr. Tripathi.

In addition to improved access to care, the Bloomington cardiovascular surgery program is also expanding its capabilities and services to include more advanced procedures.

It offers a full range of traditional cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, as well as minimally invasive robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery.

These robotic-assisted surgery techniques are a major advancement, especially for patients.

Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, which requires a long incision down the chest, these minimally invasive procedures involve only a few small incisions and allow for quicker recovery time.

“This leads to smaller incisions, smaller scar, less bleeding, less risk of infection, less need for blood transfusion, shorter hospital stay and a much faster recovery so patients can return to their normal activities much sooner” says Dr. Tripathi.

As the cardiovascular program continues to grow, it’s improving access to advanced heart care close to home while strengthening the overall health and well-being of south-central Indiana communities.
