Nurse brings own experience as heart transplant patient to the bedside

Todd Zortman is a wound care nurse at IU Health Methodist and University Hospitals. He's also a heart transplant patient who, in his spare time, counsels with those in the hospital who are waiting for a heart transplant of their own. "Getting that call that doctors found a heart could happen next week or it could happen six months from now. You don't know when the call's going to come and that waiting is tough," said Todd. "I visit with these patients and most of them are scared to death... I just want to take everything I've experienced and say, this is what it's going to be like. You'll make it. Don't quit."
