Biography
Gastroenterologist Bret J. Spier, MD, has been living and practicing in the Bloomington community since 2010. He specializes in advanced techniques in the evaluation and treatment of various conditions, including Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer and certain pancreaticobiliary diseases.
In addition, Dr. Spier has a passion for colon cancer awareness and prevention. He feels patients should be aware of their provider's polyp detection rates, as not all providers have equal rates. Guidelines suggest precancerous polyp, also known as adenomas, should be found in 40% men and 30% women. Dr. Spier's adenoma detection rates are 59% for men and 46% for women.
Dr. Spier completed his undergrad degree at Emory University, graduating Suma Cum Laude and attended medical school at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship at University of Wisconsin – Madison. He completed an additional year of gastroenterology training in advanced therapeutic endoscopy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Spier, his wife Ellee and brother-in-law Matt run an urban farm in Bloomington focusing on community-wide educational efforts. They work with a local orchard and the Monroe County Community School Corporation on various gardening initiatives.
