Ryan J. Kozlowski, MD

Dr. Ryan J. Kozlowski, MD, is a board-certified, dual fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma and hand surgeon who specializes in preventing or reducing permanent disability in the most complex orthopedic cases. He practices at IU Health Methodist Hospital and IU Health West Hospital as an orthopedic upper extremity surgeon and lower extremity trauma surgeon. He specializes in operative and non-operative treatment of the hand, wrist and elbow, with extensive training in microvascular surgery, hand surgery, wrist surgery and reconstructive procedures on the elbow, including complex fracture care, joint replacement and arthroscopy.

In addition to his elective practice, Dr. Kozlowski specializes in traumatic injuries of the upper and lower extremities, including the hand, fingers, elbow, shoulder, hip, pelvis and legs. He has expertise in complex and routine fracture care of the femur and hip, including hip repair and replacement for fractures. He has extensive training and routinely incorporates both orthopedic and plastic surgery techniques for reconstruction after major extremity trauma, performing over 600 operations each year. Whenever possible, he offers minimally invasive surgical techniques, which help avoid complications and reduce patient recovery times.

A Midwest native, Dr. Kozlowski earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Following medical school, he completed an Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Detroit Medical Center, where he was named Chief Resident. His residency was followed by a fellowship in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular Surgery in Boston, MA, at Tufts University Medical Center and New England Baptist Hospital, an internationally recognized specialty hospital in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and disease. He followed this with an additional Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, one of the busiest orthopedic trauma centers in the United States, where he focused on operative treatment for complex fractures of the upper and lower extremities and pelvis.

Dr. Kozlowski’s research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals and has been presented at regional and national meetings. As an Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, he teaches and mentors medical students, orthopedic surgery residents, plastic surgery fellows, hand surgery fellows and orthopedic trauma surgery fellows; who routinely work with Dr Kozlowski in the operating room. He is a board-certified member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
