Primary Care Access to the Comprehensive Network of IU Health Physicians

Dr. Kevin Gebke is Chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and associate professor in clinical family. Dr. Gebke is board-certified in both family medicine and sports medicine. He joined IU Health Physicians to streamline his practice. The group provides data support with a focus on quality, allowing doctors to track metrics and establish best practices for safe, effective care.

“The goal is not to see as many patients as fast as you can,” says Gebke. “It is to provide comprehensive care.”

As a primary care provider, access to the comprehensive network of IU Health Physicians specialists is vital to preeminent patient care. The affiliation with IUSM not only matters to him, but he feels it matters to his patients.

“Some of my patients drive long distances to see me. They travel because they want to be a part of the IU Health system. The affiliation with that type of innovation is what people are looking for,” says Gebke .

Help With Running Your Practice so You can Focus on What Matters

When Dr. Sallie Hahn began medical school, her goal was to be a doctor, not a business owner. That is why IU Health Physicians was a perfect fit: the group takes care of running her office so she can focus on what matters – patient care.

“Coming out of residency training, it takes time to get busy as a new physician. IU Health Physicians provided financial security as I built my practice. It feels like a family here,” Hahn says.

Dr. Hahn enjoys having a large, qualified referral base at her fingertips – from primary to specialty care. IU Health Physicians made the on-boarding process a smooth transition and helped her grow her practice while providing training on EMR. Another plus for Dr. Hahn is the high-level of technology provided by IU Health Physicians.

“Cutting edge technology is something patients and physicians expect,” Hahn says. “It should be top of the line. And here, it is.”

Like so many physicians in the group, the connection to IUSM enhances Dr. Hahn’s practice.

“Affiliation with the IU School of Medicine allows me to involve my patients in clinical trials while providing top-notch care,” says Dr. Hahn.

Cardiologist Enjoys Company of Skilled Physicians

Dr. Richard Kovacs, clinical director of the Krannert Institute, is a nationally recognized clinical cardiologist and a member of IU Health Physicians. Dr. Kovacs joined the group for myriad of reasons, including the relationship with IUSM, where he is also a professor of clinical medicine.

“Your service to the university is embedded. It’s a unique opportunity to have the school be part of a system of care,” Kovacs says. “Patients also take comfort in that relationship.”

As a clinical cardiologist, Dr. Kovacs excels at non-invasive cardiology and electrocardiography. He appreciates being a part of a group of like-minded physicians who represent a broad range of expertise. In Dr. Kovacs’s office, internal referrals happen on a daily basis. This team approach puts patient care at the forefront, opening the doors to better outcomes. Being a part of IU Health Physicians allows Dr. Kovacs to focus on patients rather than running a practice.

“Indiana has a strong approach to medical care. We are at a crossroads of medicine. And we’re lucky to have a blend of the best things,” says Dr. Kovacs.

Urology Pioneer Focused on Integration

As a urology specialist for more than 30 years, Dr. James Lingeman pioneered several minimally invasive surgeries for the treatment of kidney stones. In fact, he launched the first laparoscopy program in the state and was the first to use extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) technology in the United States. In the early 1980s, Dr. Lingeman joined what would become Methodist Urology. Today, the practice is a valued part of IU Health Physicians.

According to Dr. Lingeman, “As the system has grown and developed to create a highly integrated employed physicians practice model, it has made it easier for physicians to do their work. This is the way healthcare is going in the U.S. - providing patients access to the proper physician when they need it, ensuring any test can be done promptly, and whatever physician they interact with has quick access to all their information. This will provide for a better patient experience.”

When Dr. Lingeman sees a patient in the office, his/her records are already a part of the system. “The more information you have, the better you can treat patients. Another very practical thing we do right now is send a consolidated bill instead of separate hospital, radiology and other bills to keep track of. With IU Health Physicians, it is a single statement for everything.”

“For my needs, IU Health Physicians is very accommodating” says Dr. Lingeman. “They have helped me establish new programs and are always asking ‘How can we help you?’”

In addition to being a member of IU Health Physicians, Dr. Lingeman is a professor of urology at IUSM.

“Without the IU School of Medicine, I wouldn’t be able to do the job I do now. My affiliation allows me to provide state-of-the-art treatments to patients. I am very involved in teaching and research and publish extensively, which makes the IU School of Medicine vital to my career," says Dr. Lingeman.

Plastic Surgeon Chooses Indianapolis

When he joined IU Health Physicians as a facial plastic surgeon specializing in facial cosmetics and reconstruction, and as a faculty member at IUSM in the Department of Otolaryngology, Dr. Taha Shipchandler chose our group over private practice. As the only physician in the network specializing in facial plastic surgery and otolaryngology, IU Health Physicians provided him the financial support needed to get his practice up and running.

“The IU School of Medicine was a defining factor for me. I am part of a larger organization with very high standards of quality, success and accountability, and we are at the forefront of patient care,” Dr. Shipchandler says.

Another key factor in his search for a group to call home was physician leadership. At IU Health Physicians, Dr. Shipchandler found a physician-led and physician-managed multi-specialty practice group dedicated to clinical insight and physician perspective.

Our patients are offered the opportunity to be early recipients of new medical treatments. These clinical trials could lead to innovative treatments that benefit patients in Indiana and around the world.

We are uniquely positioned to practice the most progressive medicine available and maintain constant access to the latest information that medical research offers. IU Health Physicians, in partnership with IU Health and IUSM, offer clinical trials at the following facilities:
