Families at the Farmers Market
Both IU Health Ball Memorial and IU Health Blackford offer Families at the Farmers Market, a community outreach program to provide nutrition education and practice for local families.
Area families attending the educational sessions are then given $20 per month in IU Health Bucks, which are vouchers that are redeemable any Saturday at the Growers and Makers Market in downtown Hartford City. Vouchers may be redeemed up until the final market of the season.

Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR)
Through surveys, our community has expressed their concerns about infant mortality rates in IU Health’s East Central Region and statewide. Started in 2014, the Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) committee is a partnership between IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Open Door Health Services, the Delaware County Health Department and other community-based organizations to analyze the root causes of infant mortality, which is defined as the death of a baby before his or her first birthday.
This group is dedicated to improving service systems and developing resources for women, infants and families through objectives such as implementing a community action team of health professional who promote safe sleep practices, early and adequate prenatal care, the promotion of breastfeeding and education to decrease or eliminate prenatal smoking and substance abuse.
Free Cervical Screenings
In collaboration with the Reaching Out program and the Little Red Door Cancer Services of Central Indiana, the IU Health Ball Memorial Cancer Center provides local women with cervical cancer screenings and comprehensive breast exams, free of charge. Screenings include tests for cervical cancer and HPV, and a clinical breast exam.
The free exams are provided at area IU Health family practitioners and gynecologists’ offices, the IU Health Breast Center and IU Health Ball Memorial Cancer Center at Forest Ridge. When screening results detect necessary follow up, staff members from the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) are on hand to counsel women about financial assistance and other questions.

Health Fair
Our Community Health Fair in Hartford City is a popular event in the Blackford County community, providing hundreds of residents the opportunity to speak with medical professionals, obtain educational materials and receive free-of-charge or low-cost screenings for stroke risk or diabetes. Many visitors also got a tour of the IU Health LifeLine helicopter during the morning hours.

Heartsavers
Each year, IU Health Blackford Cardio Pulmonary Rehab department honors its Phase III Cardiac Rehab patients with the annual Heartsavers banquet. Patients are recognized for cumulative miles walked, providing inspiration to others and those who are most improved. Several Hartford City and Blackford County business leaders, along with IU Health Blackford team members, provide food and refreshments for the buffet-style dinner recognizing our patients’ success.
Partnerships
IU Health Ball Memorial and Blackford partner with a number of high quality, highly engaged community organizations and initiatives to help make health and wellness improvement a reality. IU Health seeks out partnerships with non-profit community organizations and health agencies committed to improving community health, particularly in the areas of health education and research, obesity prevention, access to affordable healthcare, community revitalization and K-12 education.
Speaker’s Bureau
The IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital Foundation provides a speakers bureau to provide health experts who deliver educational talks throughout the community. Our speakers have led discussions on topics ranging from the role of our hospitals in the community, cardiovascular health and diabetes, teen health, substance abuse and perspectives on the future of healthcare. Tools Against Tobacco
The Healthy Community Alliance of Delaware and Blackford Counties is providing East Central Region residents with free tools and information necessary to combat the area’s high use of tobacco products. The Healthy Community Alliance of Delaware and Blackford Counties (HCA) was launched in 2015 by Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital to reduce the impact of chronic disease by focusing on tobacco use, increased exercise and healthy weight. The HCA is a collective-impact model, whose partner organizations influence audiences to make healthier lifestyle choices by offering interventions such as the Quit Toolkit.
Workplace Education
Workplaces, much like schools and churches, are “spheres of influence,” are places to encourage and ferment positive change. This is why IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital encourages employers to take a practical approach to healthy lifestyles, alongside community partners like the Healthy Community Alliance, Muncie Family YMCA and Ball State University.
Goals of these programs include educating audiences on better nutrition, the risks of smoking and the need for more physical activity. As part of this initiative, a team of community outreach experts, physicians and medical educators perform health screenings and general wellness assessments for employees of participating companies.
