Meeting the needs of our community in Suburban Indianapolis

IU Health Serves v5

IU Health is a leading healthcare provider in central Indiana, providing high-quality and compassionate care to patients and community members.

The Indy Suburban Region hospitals are committed to addressing the health priorities that are identified in each of their communities, such as access to healthcare services, obesity and diabetes, behavioral health and healthcare services for seniors.

The Indianapolis Suburban Region (ISR) hospitals have a strong presence among the northern Indianapolis suburb community, and they support numerous not-for-profit organizations and government agencies including schools, low-cost clinics, shelters, fire departments and chambers of commerce. Each Indy Suburban Region hospital has a unique partnership strategy within the communities that it serves.

Fresh & Fit

IU Health North, Saxony, Tipton and West hospitals designed the Fresh & Fit program to address several of the primary health priorities within their communities. Fresh & Fit is a free 10-week fitness and nutrition program offered to Hamilton, Hendricks and Tipton County residents each year.

The program is designed to help community members get moving and improve their overall well-being through workouts, a nutrition plan, health screenings and motivation. Throughout the 10 weeks, participants receive three health screenings to track their progress, such as weight reduction and improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose levels and A1C.

IU Health North and Saxony Hospitals

IU Health North and Saxony hospitals leverage partnerships with a variety of health agencies, non-profits and community organizations to address significant health priorities in the Hamilton County area. IU Health North and Saxony partner with local organizations, such as Heart and Soul Free Clinic, Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide, and Aspire Indiana Health – All with a shared mission to improve health outcomes in the surrounding community.

One example is IU Health North and Saxony’s partnership with Trinity Free Clinic to increase access to affordable, high-quality health services for uninsured and low-income residents in Hamilton County. Trinity Free Clinic provided more than 20,000 patient visits in 2021, including COVID-19 testing and COVID-19 vaccines, and they recently expanded the clinic to include daily walk-in services and integrated behavioral health. Many IU Health team members volunteer their time to provide care at Trinity Free Clinic to further increase health access.

Similarly, IU Health North and Saxony partner with the Shepherd’s Center of Hamilton County (SCHC), which offers programs and services that allow seniors to safely age in place for as long as possible. This includes SCHC’s counseling program that offers free behavioral health services for seniors/older adults with a mission to decrease symptoms of mental health conditions, decrease isolation and improve overall quality of life.

IU Health Saxony is also a partner of Mudsock Youth Athletics (MYA), a non-profit dedicated to providing recreational sports opportunities to youth in Fishers and surrounding areas. MYA has over 10,000 youth participants in recreational sports, such as baseball, softball, basketball, cheer, football, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, track, cross country and volleyball. Through partnership with MYA, in-need families can receive scholarships to participate in these sports at a free or reduced cost, enabling more youth to get physically active and involved.

In addition to these partnerships, IU Health North and Saxony team members actively engage with the community outside hospital walls to reach vulnerable populations. Outreach initiatives include health education presentations hosted at local non-profits, free health screenings, community-wide vaccine clinics and more.

IU Health Tipton Hospital

IU Health Tipton Hospital is committed to improving the future of its community members, offering programs that lead to better health. The hospital also participates in a variety of community-building activities that address the social determinants of health.

Several examples include the support of local organizations and initiatives that focus on some of the root causes of health issues, such as transportation, chronic disease and access to healthcare. IU Health Tipton’s community partners include:

  • The Encore Lifestyle and Enrichment Center
  • The Boys and Girls Club of Tipton County
  • The Tipton Community School Corporation
  • Tri-Central School Corporation
  • Tipton City Park
  • Tipton County Chamber of Commerce
  • Tipton County Health Department

In addition to community partnerships, IU Health Tipton offers several events that help support healthy lifestyles and active living. The largest event is the annual health fair. Held every spring, the fair offers a variety of free and low-cost screenings. Screenings vary each year and include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Blood draw (including glucose, A1C and cholesterol)
  • Blood pressure screenings
  • Foot screenings
  • Echocardiogram screenings
  • Sleep disorder screenings
  • Bone density screenings
  • Colorectal cancer screening kits

These screenings are offered at no cost to community members attending the fair each year. IU Health Tipton also offers an Unwanted Medicine collection at the fair, which provides a safe and secure way to dispose of expired or unwanted medications.

IU Health West Hospital

IU Health West Hospital partners with many non-profit organizations in the Hendricks County area to better serve the health needs within the community. Some of IU Health West’s partnerships include Susie’s Place, Avon and Brownsburg Schools, and Brownsburg Parks.

IU Health West partners with Hope Healthcare Services in Avon to help meet the needs of Hendricks County residents who are uninsured or under-insured. Hope Healthcare serves more than 800 people each year with primary medical and dental care, chronic disease management and medication management. Multiple IU Health West physicians volunteer at the clinic, where medical and dental care are supported entirely by volunteer healthcare providers.

IU Health West also supports the Sheltering Wings organization, a domestic violence shelter located in the Hendricks County Town of Danville. Sheltering Wings helps victims of domestic violence acquire safe shelter, food, counseling and other emergent needs. They also provide educational programming in the Hendricks County area to help the community recognize signs of unhealthy relationships.

The Hendricks County Health Partnership is an integral organization that works with IU Health West to help identify local health issues and implement strategies to address concerns related to food insecurity, substance abuse, access to healthcare services, mental health and obesity.

To address healthy nutrition, IU Health West and the Town of Brownsburg also partner to present the town’s farmers market in May through September on the Town Hall Green. In addition to creating a venue for residents to access locally grown fresh produce, IU Health West and the Town of Brownsburg are committed to supporting at-risk individuals and families by accepting WIC and SNAP payments for produce.
