Volunteering at Indiana University Health

Indiana University Health volunteers are one of our most valued resources. Volunteers bring our patients and their families comfort and aid throughout their hospital stay and healing process. We currently have volunteers across the state who give their time, talents and skill to IU Health facilities, patients and families.

Opportunities are available for students, adults and pets throughout Indiana. Many volunteers work in guest relations, gift shops, emergency rooms and on patient floors. We strive to find a volunteer opportunity that fits your interests and schedule and help you get the most out of your time with us by creating a positive, welcoming environment.

  • Free meals or a discount at hospital cafeterias
  • Free flu shots or health screenings
  • Educational opportunities
  • Recognition awards
  • Discounts at hospital gift shops
  • Experience in a healthcare field

Volunteer Stories

Our volunteers use their time at the hospital to spread cheer, give back and feel a greater connection to their community. Many of them are former patients or family members of former patients who remember a volunteer that made a difference in their stay.

Jean found her place at Indiana University Health Arnett Hospital.

"Over 11 years ago, I lost my husband. I needed to find something to keep myself busy and allow me to stay in touch with the community. Everyone at IU Health Arnett had always been so supportive and volunteering was my chance to give back.

“A few years ago when the Neurology department was still located at Greenbush, I had a brain tumor removed. When it came time to find a place to devote my time a few years later, spending my mornings here seemed like a sensible plan and gave me a sense of peace to know that if I needed them, the staff I trusted was right here.

“By volunteering at IU Health Arnett, I am able to meet new people and catch up with those I have known for years. I have become the information center for the clinic because people recognize me and know I am here to help. I have watched the clinic grow and change over the years and remain constant in the community. I always look forward to my mornings at IU Health Arnett."
