What does nonprofit healthcare mean for Indiana?
Nonprofit healthcare means resources are reinvested into patients and communities rather than distributed to shareholders.
For four consecutive years, IU Health has invested more than $1 billion annually in community benefit, more than three times what we would pay in taxes as a for-profit organization.
At IU Health, that investment includes financial assistance for eligible patients, support for Medicaid care, healthcare workforce training, community health programs and services that communities depend on, even when they operate at a financial loss.
Our investment in Indiana communities is building a healthier, more prosperous Indiana for families and Main Street businesses. Community benefit investment is guided by federal requirements and informed by the unique health needs of the communities we serve.
Mobile Lung Screening
Indiana's first mobile lung screening unit is traveling across the state, bringing lifesaving early detection services directly to communities, particularly rural areas where access to screening may be limited. Across Indiana, community benefit investments are helping prevent chronic disease, improve maternal and infant health, support healthy aging and connect vulnerable populations to essential resources.
From blood pressure screenings and tobacco cessation programs to fall prevention education and student support initiatives, these efforts help address the factors that shape health long before someone enters a hospital. For example, in early 2026, the number of Hoosiers enrolled in free IU Health programming exceeded the projection by 12 percent.

Expanding access to blood pressure care
A partnership with the Indy Health District is expanding access to blood pressure care through a 16-week remote patient monitoring program.
Training Indiana’s future healthcare workforce.
IU Health’s partnership with the IU School of Medicine means that not only do Hoosiers have access to world-class care right here in Indiana, but our community benefit dollars are at work training the healthcare workforce of tomorrow, helping ensure Indiana has the physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals needed to meet the state's future healthcare needs.
Reducing financial barriers to care
Nearly $181 million in community benefit dollars were spent relieving Hoosiers of medical bills through IU Health’s generous financial assistance program, supporting eligible Hoosiers who otherwise might have delayed or skipped necessary care.
Supporting care for Medicaid patients
IU Health absorbs the difference when Medicaid payments fall short of the actual cost of care. This nonprofit investment allows us to continue serving some of Indiana’s most vulnerable residents without interruption. One in 5 IU Health patients is covered by Medicaid.
Maintaining essential services communities depend on
We continue offering essential clinical services, even when they operate at a financial loss, because patients and communities rely on them. As a nonprofit health system, we invest in services that address critical community needs, even when reimbursement does not cover the full cost of care.

A recent peer-reviewed study found that greater access to hospital community benefit programs was associated with improved county-level health outcomes.
Key findings included:
- Counties with greater access to community benefit programs saw fewer reports of poor physical and mental health.
- A 1% increase in total benefit spending was associated with measurable reductions in physically and mentally unhealthy days.
